For the kind attention of the SCHEDULING OFFICE

Thiene, 28th October 2008

Dear Mr. President,

I know that thinking that you, the President of the United States of America, would reply to my letter is an utopia, especially when considering my lack of credentials and that on 3rd March 2006 I wrote to our President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano and never got a reply.
But I do not give up easily, and, as the saying goes……Audaces fortuna iuvat (Fortune favours the brave).
And we must never forget the help in terms of men and weapons that your great country gave us during the Second World War and that eventually gave us our freedom back.
Besides this, I would like to bring to your attention one of the problems Italy is facing and that is closest to my heart.
Our country is divided into two parts: Northern Italy, where industries produce wealth, and Southern Italy, that slacks behind and wastes resources. Northern Italy is the sun whereas Southern Italy represents the night.
80% of members of Parliament are of southern origins whereas only 20% represent the Northern part of the country. Political power in the south is in the hands of criminal organizations (such as “mafia”, “camorra” and “‘ndrangheta”) and public television shamelessly blacks out the more productive Northern regions.
Now, I would like to tell you about the history of the Venetian Region and of the thousand-year-old Serenissima Repubblica Veneta (Serenissima Venetian Republic), - whose imperial capital is Venice - oppressed for many years and whose brave patriots were killed by the emperor Francis Joseph of Austria.
In 1865 it was given to the French Savoy family which took over our land; at the time my grandfather Pietro was twenty years old and, were he still alive, could easily recall those events! I still own some coins issued by the Venetian Mint, the Ducats, which were handed down to me by my grandfather: one, dating back to the year 1800, weighs 1.6 grams and is made of solid silver!

We, the Venetian people, love our country dearly, a land where saints, poets and great artists were born and no one will be allowed to destroy 14 centuries of history, our beacon of light and source of civilization and dignity.
Now, on behalf of a people subjugated by a wicked power, I humbly ask the most powerful man in the world to intercede with out Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi so that he will call a referendum to ask the people of the Venetian Region to become part of the Federation of the United States of America.
I am certain that 80% of people will respond positively to this call.
My letter is a message from a people who anxiously and with confidence awaits its freedom.
Most sincere greetings from the Venetian Region

Agostino Vaccari
